Context
What they came to us with
A fintech startup was approaching a public launch where a critical bug wouldn't just be an inconvenience — in financial software, it damages trust in a way that's expensive to recover from. The team had built quickly and had some ad-hoc testing, but nothing that would reliably gate a release.
The specific risk was the one that shows up most often in fintech: a payment or account-state edge case that passes manual testing and fails under real user behavior.
Approach
What we actually did
We built the test coverage in layers rather than relying on end-to-end tests alone. API and contract testing covered the service boundaries where a breaking change would silently break a consumer — including the billing and webhook paths where a missed or duplicated event is the most common cause of "customer paid but account wasn't upgraded" incidents.
End-to-end suites covered the critical user journeys a failure would actually cost the business money on, written with resilient locators and isolated state so the suite stayed trustworthy rather than becoming the flaky suite teams learn to ignore. Automated regression ran inside the CI/CD pipeline as a release gate, so a failing test blocked a release instead of becoming a Slack message after the fact.
Because the product touches financial data, tenant-scope and data-isolation checks were part of the automated suite — the class of bug that should be caught by a test, not by a code reviewer's attention span.
